Viceregal Lodge

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

Preparation of a Conservation Masterplan for the historic Viceregal Lodge in Shimla. Designed by Henry Irwin and completed in 1888, the historic Victorian building was the home to the British Vicreroys in the Summer Capital of India and witnessed some of the most momentous events in modern India’s history. The project created a conservation plan for the building, its Victorian interiors and historic services as well as a catalogue of its historic furniture. It established a holistic vision for the landscape restoration of the Rashtrapati Niwas estate covering 89 acres, among the finest colonial historic estates in India. The project addressed the building’s present use as the Indian Institute of Advanced Study and entailed the adaptive reuse of the old Fire Station into an Arts Centre.
