Durbar Hall was originally designed by the eminent Bombay architect George Wittet and was constructed in 1911 to welcome King George V and Queen Mary. Post-independence, the 250 seater hall was used as a ceremonial venue for oath-taking ceremonies of Governors, Chief Ministers, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Lokayukta and other constitutional functionaries. Durbar Hall underwent a series of insensitive interventions compromising the structural stability of the historic building. As a part of the Raj Bhavan redevelopment plan, it was collectively decided to reconstruct Durbar Hall as per the historic design with a Neo-Classical exterior and French Revival interior design. The reconstruction project has been undertaken by respecting the original and historic architectural features and to highlight the contribution of architect George Wittet in Bombay.
