Inaugurated in April 1853, Byculla Station is one of the oldest stations on the Bombay-Thane railway route. The station is over 169 years old and was originally built as a wooden structure before it took its current form in 1857. The modest building is built in the Victorian Gothic style of architecture and is a protected Grade II A heritage building under the Heritage Regulations for Greater Bombay, 1995. The station underwent a series of insensitive interventions over the years that had altered the aesthetics of the building. The main aim of the project was to restore the station back to original respecting the historic architectural features, construction techniques and building materials.
